Frequently asked questions
Questions and answers
Everything you need to know about the stud, our horses, our stallions and visiting Quinta do Pilar.
The stud and our breeds
Which breeds does Coudelaria Henrique Abecasis breed?
We breed Pure Bred Lusitano horses, the breed at the origin of the stud, and also Luso Warmblood horses, bred with sport in mind.
Why breed Luso Warmbloods?
The Pure Bred Lusitano has a closed studbook, which is understandable given its aim of preserving the breed. But this brings limitations when it comes to breeding for sport.
So, drawing on our in-depth knowledge of our mares and the wide choice of sport stallions available, we also use this route to breed an ever better sport horse.
Are your horses registered?
Yes. Our Pure Bred Lusitanos are registered in the breed's Studbook, managed by the APSL, and our Luso Warmbloods in the Luso Warmblood Studbook. All have passports and up-to-date papers.
What is a linear profile and why does it matter?
It is an objective description of each mare, trait by trait, on a scale between two extremes, without judging her as good or bad. By comparing the mare's profile with the stallion's, we choose the cross that reinforces her best qualities and complements what we want to improve in the next generation.

Do you have horses for sale?
Yes. In the Horses in training section, the horses available for sale are marked as such. Besides these, we may have other, younger horses, and we also sell colts and fillies from one year old.
If you are looking for something in particular, get in touch: we will be glad to help.
What ages and levels are your horses?
From yearling colts and fillies to backed horses competing at the various levels of dressage. Every horse has its own time, and we make sure each one reaches its new owner with the right preparation for its age.
I am interested in one of the stud's horses. What should I do?
Simply contact us by phone, by email or through the form on this site, and arrange a visit to Quinta do Pilar or an online meeting.
Before moving on to any negotiation, we like to get to know people, understand what they are looking for and advise on the most suitable horse. It matters a great deal to us to know that our horses are in good hands.
Do your horses have a vet check?
Yes. All our horses have a full veterinary examination (vet check) before backing, including screening for osteochondrosis (OCD). At the time of sale, buyers may also carry out their own pre-purchase examination with a vet of their choice.
Can I try a horse before buying?
Yes. When you visit Quinta do Pilar you can watch the horse work and ride it. For buyers further away, we send up-to-date videos and hold online meetings.
Do you sell horses abroad?
Yes. We help buyers with the paperwork, the export veterinary examination and the transport arrangements, so that the horse reaches its destination safely.
What kind of rider are your horses suited to?
Amateurs looking for a reliable horse that is a pleasure to ride, young riders in competition, and professionals seeking potential for the highest levels. We help each person find the right horse.
The breed and sport
Is the Lusitano a good dressage horse?
Yes. With its ability to collect, its balance and its willingness to work, the Lusitano has established itself in international dressage, including at major championships and the Olympic Games. The sport selection of our mares aims to strengthen precisely these qualities.
What is your horses' temperament like?
We look after it from day one: foals are handled from birth and every horse is given its own time. The result is confident horses that are easy to handle and enjoy working with their rider.
